Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

Sarah Powell obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Vanderbilt University and went on to practice nursing in a variety of specialties including Pediatrics, NICU, Labor & Delivery, Postpartum, and Mother-Baby. She was inspired to return to school while working in her local community hospital with mothers experiencing post-partum depression and psychosis. She received her Master of Science in Nursing degree, specializing as a Psychiatry and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner from Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia.

Ms. Powell is an Advance Practice Registered Nurse who works with patients of all ages and genders and specializes in perinatal, child/adolescent, and trauma. Ms. Powell practices holistic care, believing that there is no separation of body and mind, and that often, what ails the body also affects brain function and mental health. In addition to prescribing medication when needed, Ms. Powell works with her patients on the use of non-pharmacologic modes of treatment. She provides nutritional and dietary recommendations, may recommend over-the-counter vitamins or supplements, and teaches breathing, meditation, and relaxation strategies.

Ms. Powell holds a National Board Certification from the American Nurses Credentialing Center as a Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. She is a member of the American Nurses Association, the Florida Nurses Association, and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She has been practicing as a Licensed Advanced Practice Registered Nurse since 2014. Ms. Powell is continuing her education through the Institute for Functional Medicine, which utilizes an “upstream” approach to diagnose and treat illness in order to promote and maintain health and wellness, and to prevent and minimize relapse.
